Easy Crochet: Mist Cocoon Cardigan. Free Pattern +Video

In celebration of the coming spring, here is a lovely crochet tutorial to add to your to-do lists.  The Mist Cocoon Cardigan is a fantastic crochet project if you’re looking for a cozy and stylish layering piece. This pattern creates a beautiful design with a touch of texture, making it a perfect addition to your crochet handmade wardrobe. Whether you're a seasoned crocheter or an ambitious beginner, this blog post will walk you through the process step by step.

Understanding the Offset V-Stitch

The offset V-stitch is the primary design feature of this cocoon. It is a variation of the traditional V-stitch that creates an elegant and lacy effect. Instead of stacking the V-stitches directly on top of one another, they are placed in the spaces between the previous row’s V-stitches, creating a staggered pattern.

How to make the Offset V-Stitch:

  1. Chain a multiple of 3 + 1 for turning.

  2. In the 4th chain from the hook, work (dc, ch 1, dc) – this is your first V-stitch.

  3. Skip 2 chains, then work another V-stitch in the next chain.

  4. Repeat across the row.

  5. Place V-stitches in the chain-1 spaces from the previous row for the next row.

Step-by-Step Instructions for The Mist Cocoon Cardigan

  • Begin by chaining a starting row that measures the desired width of your cardigan (typically 36-40 inches for a relaxed fit).
  • Work in offset V-stitch pattern until your piece reaches approximately 30-36 inches in length.
  • Fasten off and weave in ends.

Step 1: Crochet the Main Rectangle

For size S-M, Chain a multiple of 148

Row 1: 1dc into the 4th ch from the hook, *skip 2 ch, work a v stitch of (1dc, 1 ch, 1dc) into the next ch, repeat from * to the last 3ch, skip 2 ch, 1 dc into the last ch, turn yarn

Row 2: Ch 4 1 dc into the first st, work a v stitch of (1dc, 1 ch, 1dc) the 2nd dc of the next v st, Repeat from * until  2 stitches remain, skip  1st and 1dc  into the last stitch.

Row 3: Row 2: Ch 4 1 dc into the first st, work a v stitch of (1dc, 1 ch, 1dc) the 2nd dc of the next v st, Repeat from * until  2 stitches remain, skip  1st and 1dc  into the last stitch.

Repeat Row 3 until you reach 23 inches in width

Step 2: Fold and Seam the Sleeves

  • Lay your rectangle flat and fold the 4 edges in a triangle shape and bring the sides together.
  • Seam the sides, leaving armholes ( leave 5 inches opening from the fold) unstitched.
  • Use a whip stitch to join the edges.

Step 3: Add a Border

  • Attach yarn at the bottom edge, ch 1, and add half double crochet around the cocoon opening to create a polished look. When you reach the end of the round, sl stitch into the first ch, ch1, and continue another 9 rounds
  • After making a total of 10 rounds, fasten off your yarn and weave in the ends.

Step 4:  Shaping the armhole

  • Attach yarn at the bottom edge, ch 1, and add half double crochet around the armhole opening to create a border look. When you reach the end of the round sl st into the first ch, ch1, and continue another 4 rounds.
  • After making a total of 5 rounds fasten off your yarn and weave in the end.  Continue with the other side.

Step 5: Blocking (Optional, but Recommended)

  • Lightly block your cardigan to enhance the stitch definition and drape.
Your Mist Cocoon Cardigan is all done. Enjoy!
