Easy Crochet: The Almond Beanie For Beginners

The almond beanie is a beautiful and simple design that is crocheted side to side instead of in a regular beanie pattern that is worked from the bottom up or top down. The best thing about making this almond beanie is that it is easily customizable.

The Almond Stitch is a beautiful stitch that contains textured and delicate ridges.  It is an easy stitch that requires that you know only two crochet stitches, the half double crochet, and the slip stitch

I love working with this stitch. The almond stitch is easy to remember because it is a four-row repeat. In the second row, you will make four slip-and-half double crochet stitches that only work in the back loops.

 Abbreviations used

ch= chain

How to get the proper wear size for your beanie:

This hat is custom-made to fit an average adult. To ensure the hat fits comfortably, once you’ve crocheted several rows, stretch the rim around your head, where you would normally wear a hat. If the beanie fits comfortably, which means it is not tight, but also not too loose, you can fasten off the yarn and start putting your hat together.

The Almond Stitch:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial.

To begin, make a slip knot and insert it into your hook. Chain your desired number of chains. You must create a multiple of eight stitches for this stitch pattern and then add five for your starting chain. For the Beanie, I want my length to be approximately 9 inches, so I will chain 40 +1. The extra stitch will be needed to close off the beanie when weaving the top part.

Row 1: Slip stitch in the second chain from your hook and in the next nine chains. *Half double crochet in the next four chains, slip stitch in each of the next four chains. Repeat from * across until two chains are left. Sl st into the two chains.  Chain one and turn your work.

Row Two: Working in the back loop only all the way across, slip stitch in two stitches *half double crochet in the next four stitches, slip stitch in each of the next four stitches.  Repeat from * across until ten stitches are left, slip stitch into the ten stitches. Chain one and turn yarn.

Rows Three: Working in the back loop of the stitches all the way across, Slip stitch into 10 stitches *Slip stitch in each of the next four stitches Half double crochet in each of the four stitches, Repeat from * across until the last two stitches, Slip stitch into the last two stitches.  Chain one and turn the yarn

Rows Four: Working in the back loop only all the way across, Slip stitch into two stitches *slip stitch in each of the next four stitches Half double crochet in each of the four stitches, slip stitch in each of the next four stitches, half double crochet in each of the next four stitches.  Repeat from * across until the last ten stitches, Slip stitch into the last ten stitches.   Chain one and turn yarn.

Row Five:

Working in the back loop only across, slip stitch in each of the ten stitches, *half double crochet in each of the next four stitches, slip stitch in each of the next four stitches.  Repeat from * across until you have the last two stitches. Chain one and turn your work.

For the rest of the pattern, repeat rows two to five for the pattern until you get to approximately 18 inches.  Fasten off and weave in your yarn ends.

 Attaching the sides together.

Now you can turn your beanie inside out so that you will see the wrong side is facing. With a smaller hook, I used a 5mm and inserted a new yarn.  Working through both blo of both sides, sl st into the sts across. This will attach the two ends together.  Fasten off your yarn.

Closing up the top of the beanie.

With a tapestry needle and a long piece of yarn, weave in and out from the top of the beanie(The top of the beanie where the two slip stitches were placed). Weave the yarn through the sl stitches and go around the beanie. Once you finish this, you can pull the yarn end tight and close the top of the beanie.  Weave in all loose yarn ends. You can add a pompom for design.

Enjoy making your beanie!
