The granny stitch requires chains in a multiple of 3 + 2 extra stitches. To get the right measurement for the front and back panels use a measuring tape and measure around your waist. After half the measurement. Ex: if your waist measurement is 28 inches, half of it would be 14 so you can count your chains up to 14 inches, just remember to always keep the number in the multiple of 3 then add 2 more chains.

Creating the panel

Create a slipknot, insert it onto the hook, and chain it up in the multiple of 3+2

Row 1: Make a sc into the 2nd ch from the hook, and continue with a sc into each ch across the row.

Row 2: Ch 3, turn yarn, 1dc into the same st.*skip 2 sts, 3dc in the next st. Repeat * across the row. Make 2dc into the last stitch.

Row 3: Ch3 (counts as 1 dc) turn yarn. Make 3dc in the sp between the 3d group. Repeat until the last st. Make 1dc into the last st.

Row 4: Ch3 (counts as 1 dc) 1dc into the same st.*skip 2 sts, 3dc in the next st. Repeat * across the row. Make 2dc into the last stitch.

For rows 5-23 repeat rows 3-4

Decreasing the panel

Decreasing in crochet means that the current row you will be working on will be shorter than your previous row. The reason for this is that this technique requires that you reduce or skip some stitches.   As a result, the shape of the project will become narrower.

Row 24:  Ch3 (counts as 1 dc) Make 2 dc into the first ch sp and continue with making 3 dc in each sp until the last ch sp. In the last ch sp, make 2 dc and add 1 dc into the last st.

Row25: Ch3 (counts as 1 dc) Make 2 dc into the first ch sp and continue with making 3 dc in each sp until the last ch sp. In the last ch sp, make 2 dc and add 1 dc into the last st.

For the next four rows, repeat rows 25 There is a total of 6 rows of decreasing. Turn yarn

Adding the straps

Row 30:  Make 3dc into the next 3 ch spaces

Row31: Ch3 (counts as 1dc) turn yarn, 1dc into the same st, 3dc into the next two ch sp. Make 2dc into the last st.

Row 32: Ch3 (counts as 1 dc) Turn yarn, make 3 dc in the next 3 ch sp Make 1 dc into the last stitch.

For the next seven rows repeat rows 31+32 After you finish the rows, fasten off the yarn. For the other side insert new yarn, Ch1 to secure it. and repeat these same steps.

Once you have the front panel finish. Create another one for the back Repeat steps from row 1 Once you have two panels done, bring two panels together with the right sides facing each other. Connect the two straps together by sewing yarn with a yarn needle through both front and back loops. When you are done, fasten off the yarn and repeat these steps to the other strap.

Connecting the sides

With a 5mm hook, start at the end of both panels together and insert new yarn and ch1 to secure it. Add 1 sc into both loops. Continue adding sc across both loops of panels until you reach the decreasing of the panels. You can use a stitch marker as a guide to see where the decrease is. After stitching the last sc, fasten off and repeat the steps to the other side.

Adding a Border to the straps

Insert new yarn into the stitch, (anyone is fine) ch1 to secure it and add a hdc into each st and ch sp around. When you reach the end of the round. Sl st into the first ch and fasten off. Repeat the steps to the other side.

Shaping the neckline

Insert new yarn, into the stitch, (You can start in any stitch in the neckline area) ch1 to secure it and add a hdc into each st and ch sp around. When you reach the end of the round. Sl st into the first ch and fasten off.  After this, you can weave in all yarn ends and there you have it! You finished your Crochet garment.
