We are in the beautiful month of October and the weather is very cool and crisp. I have been enjoying the fresh apples and pumpkin spice lattes. I will teach you how to crochet the demure flower top in this tutorial. In this project, I will use sunflower granny squares and connect them   Granny squares can be intimidating, especially for some who are still new to crocheting. In this post, I will teach you an easy way how to crochet sunflower granny squares in addition, to making a top with them.

 

The Sunflower Granny Square

Granny squares are a beautiful, timeless crochet pattern that helps you to create amazing and personalized projects. One of the most charming and stunning versions is the sunflower granny square. This cheerful design includes vibrant yellows, oranges, and greens to create a flower-inspired motif that can be used in many crochet projects, such as blankets, tops, or even bags.

How to crochet the sunflower square.

 

1. Start with a magic circle, or chain 4, and slip stitch into the first chain. Chain 3, Make 11 double crochet into the ring.  Close the circle and slip stitch into the top of the chain 3 =12 double crochets

 

2. Chain 1, add a single crochet into the same stitch. Make two single crochets into every other stitch around the circle slip stitch into chain 1 =24 double crochets

 

3.  Chain 3 dc3tog (There have to be 4 loops left on the hook before pulling through) into the same stitch, ch2, skip the next stitch. *  Dc4tog (There have to be 5 loops left on the hook before pulling through) into the next stitch, chain 2, skip the next stitch Repeat * 10 times =12 petals

Border for granny square

1. Chain 3 make 2 double crochets, chain 3, and make 3 double crochets into the same stitch.

2.    Make 3 half-double into the next two chain spaces, when you reach the corner chain space Chain 3 makes 3 double crochets, chain 3, and make 3 double crochets into the same space. *Make 3 half-doubles into the next two chain spaces. When you reach the corner chain space Chain 3 makes 3 double crochets, chain 3, and make 3 Repeat* two more times 48 stitches in total. Slip stitch into the top of 3 chains.


 Crocheting the top border.

 

       1. Chain 3, 1 dc into the same stitch, 1 double crochet each stitch before the chain space.

2. Into the chain space add another 2 double crochets, 2 chains, 2double crochet

 3 1double crochet into the stitch. Repeat until you reach the chain space.

4   2. Into the chain space add another 2 double crochets, 2 chains, 2double crochet

5.  1double crochet into each stitch. Repeat until you reach the chain space.

6 By the chain space Skip a stitch, add another 2 double crochets, 2 chains, 2 double crochet

7 1 double crochet into each stitch. Repeat until you reach the chain space.

8 By the chain space Skip a stitch, add another 2 double crochets, 2 chains, 2 double crochets

91 double crochets into each stitch. Repeat until you reach the chain space.

 and slip stitch into the top of the 3 chains. Fasten off.

 

You will need to make 24 squares in total. Divide the squares into two panels 12 on each side

 


Connecting the squares

Use stitch markers to hold the right sides of the 12 squares together, ( 4 squares horizontal, and 3 squares vertical) with a 5mm hook, insert new yarn into the chain space Ch1, and add 1 sc into the ch space, Make 1 sc into the front and back loops of both squares. When you reach the ch spaces add 2sc into it. Continue across. Fasten off at the end of the row. When you complete one panel of 12 squares create the other panel. This will give you a front and back panel.

Connecting the shoulders

 Have the wrong sides of the panels facing together. (Keep the panels like this for connecting the shoulder, and sides.) Insert new yarn with a 5mm hook starting at the top-end corner. into the chain space, Ch1, and add 1 sc into the ch space, Make 1 sc into the front and back loops of both squares. Stitch until you reach 13 cm. (This will create the neckline) Continue with the other side.

Connecting the sides

Starting at one side of the bottom end corner, insert new yarn with a  5mm hook. into the chain space, Ch1, and add 1 sc into the ch space, make 1 sc into the front and back loops of both squares When you reach the ch spaces add 2sc into it. Continue across until 20cm. (This will also create the armhole) continue with the other side.


Stitching the Neckline, armholes, and the bottom

With a 5mm hook, insert new yarn, Ch,1 to secure, add 1 sc into each stitch around, and add 2 sc into the Ch spaces. When you reach the end of the round Sl st into the 1st ch, fasten off. You can extend the length if you want. Weave in all yarn ends.
