How to crochet the solid shell stitch for beginners

I am back with another how-to crochet-that-stitch tutorial. It is the beginning of September and soon to be my favorite upcoming season fall. So today I will show you how to crochet the elegant solid shell stitch. This stitch consists of a single and double crochet that repeats only two rows. What is also great about this stitch is that it looks the same on both sides, which makes it reversible. This stitch can create beautiful crochet projects such as blankets, shawls, tops, and dresses.  This article contains affiliate links, purchasing through them will help give me a small commission, that will be at no extra cost to you.

How to crochet the shell stitch

The shell stitch consists of a multiple of 8 +2 chains. In my How to Crochet Stitch video tutorials, I always recommend starting with a small number of chains when learning a new stitch. but keep it in the multiple of 8 and make sure that you chain two more for the base. For a size small I chained 24 + 2 =26 chains.

Start with a chain of 8+2 (In the video I chained 144 +2 for a bust size of 34)

Row 1 1 Sc into the 2nd ch from the hook, *skip 2 ch, 5dc into ch, skip 2 ch, 1 sc into ch. Repeat * across chains. Turn yarn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc) 2 dc into the first st, *skip 2 dc, 1 sc into next dc, skip 2 dc, 5 dc into the next sc. Repeat * across row, end with 3dc into sc, skip tch turn yarn.

Row: 3 Ch1, 1sc into the first st, *skip 2 dc, 5dc into the next sc, skip 2dc, 1sc into next dc. Repeat * across row. End with 1sc into the top of the tch. Turn yarn

Repeat Rows 3-4 until you reach your desired length.
